Personally, I don’t think it matters much, but it’s a question that comes up quite often.  First off, He is the Son of God and transcends any and all nationality or race.  For some people, this isn’t good enough.  I figured I would attempt to give a non-bias approach to the race and nationality of Jesus Christ, and I’ll try to keep it as historical as possible for those who weren’t happy with the answer above.

What race was Jesus Christ?

This is an extremely difficult question to answer because there was no description of Jesus in the Bible.  The only information that was mentioned is that Jesus Christ was born of the virgin Mary.  Mary is thought to be of Jewish descent.  This would make Jesus, Jewish.  It can be easily assumed that He was Jewish due to the nature of the area he was born and raised.  He frequented synagogues throughout His life and participated in Jewish holidays.  One would think that there would have been some mention in the Gospels if he wasn’t a Jew.  This is why the commonly accepted race of Jesus was Jewish.

Another widely accepted possibility is that Jesus was Middle Eastern in appearance.  Almost all religious scholars believe this is also a possibility due the demographics of that area at that time.  Please be aware that this was 2000 years ago.  The Middle East at that time was probably a very different place.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_2″ layout=”1_2″ last=”yes” spacing=”yes” center_content=”no” hide_on_mobile=”no” background_color=”” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” background_position=”left top” hover_type=”none” link=”” border_position=”all” border_size=”0px” border_color=”” border_style=”” padding_top=”” padding_right=”” padding_bottom=”” padding_left=”” margin_top=”” margin_bottom=”” animation_type=”” animation_direction=”” animation_speed=”0.1″ animation_offset=”” class=”” id=”” min_height=””][fusion_text]

What Nationality is Jesus Christ?

Mary and Joseph were from the town of Nazareth which is a city that resided in lower Galilee (present day Israel).  He would have been Galilean.  This is very straightforward.  He was referred to as Jesus of Nazareth.[/fusion_text][fusion_text]

The Appearance of Jesus

Jesus would have more than likely been of darker skin color due to his nationality.  It is thought He would have had more of an olive complexion as opposed to the depictions of him during later Christian art.  More than likely the pale skin and flowing brown to blonde hair is unlikely.  This was more than likely due to the artists wanting Jesus to be more familiar to those viewing the art.  It is also very unlikely that he would have had long flowing hair.  It was very common for male Galilean citizens at that time to have short hair.  It was even mentioned in an epistle from Paul to the Corinthians that long hair is considered disgraceful.  It’s very unlikely that this would have been said by Paul if Jesus had long hair.

There has been countless times in history where the appearance, nationality, or race has been challenged.  I think a lot of it has to do with ill conceived thoughts and ideas.  People probably wish to change his race, nationality, or appearance to fit more with someone they can relate to in regards to physical appearance.  What everyone needs to realize is that it doesn’t matter what He looked like.  It doesn’t matter where He was from.  It doesn’t matter what race or nationality He was.  The only thing that matters is Jesus gave up everything for us.  He taught us to love and forgive each other.  He wants us to remember that everything we have is owed to God.  This is the important part of the story.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
