Archangel Michael in Catholicism
Catholics still refer to him as Saint Michael or Saint Michael the Archangel. In Catholic teachings Michael serves as the general of God’s Army, balance, angel of death, and guardian of the Church. The name “Angel of death” isn’t intended in any way to be considered negative or depressing. He is there to escort souls to heaven. Most Christian artists depict Archangel Michael as holding a sword, spear, or scales (referring to balance). He was often used throughout Catholic history as the symbol of might and power of the church. This created a special admiration of Archangel Michael by the orders of knights during the period of the Middle Ages.
Archangel Michael has always been viewed as a defender of heaven. He is the prince of angels and destroyer of evil. It is written:
And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels going forth to war with the dragon; and the dragon warred and his angels; And they prevailed not, neither was their place found any more in heaven. And the great dragon was cast down, the old serpent, he that is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world; he was cast down to the earth, and his angels were cast down with him.

Archangel Michael’s feast day is the 29th of September. Not only is this day set aside for Archangel Michael but for the other angels as well. The Church of England actually refers to this day as “Feast of Saint Michael and All Angels.”

Other Christian Denomination’s View of Michael
The Jehovah’s Witnesses, Protestants, and Seventh Day Adventists commonly believe that Archangel Michael is actually Jesus Christ in spiritual form. They defend their position with Revelation 12 with the reference to the woman giving birth. It is thought that this is reference to Jesus and then infant Jesus/Archangel Michael dispels evil out of the heavens. Some of the additional ideas is the similarities between the tasks/roles given to both Michael and Jesus. If Jesus is the Son of God, then it is known that he was created, made mortal, then died for our sins and returned to heaven. Could it be that they are one in the same? I’m not going to argue against it even though I believe they are two separate individuals.
The really interesting part is according to Jewish and Orthodoxy tradition there are actually seven angels of heaven. The Bible only mentions Gabriel, Michael, and Raphael (in the Book of Tobit) by name. I understand that not all versions of the Bible recognize the Book of Tobit, but I figured it should be included, because I was raised the the King James Bible. Why is Archangel Michael the Patron Saint of Police Officers, firefighters, paramedics, and military?
As Archangel Michael defends heaven from the forces of evil, so do police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and military protect us from evil. They are all here to help us. It’s only fitting that Michael is there to defend them for harm.

servant in the house of the Divine King
and our admirable conductor,
you who shine with excellence
